Important Distinctions
There are actually two beasts which make up the Search Engine World: Search Engines and Directories, and they are very different. The most important difference is Search engine indexes are compiled by machines and Directory indexes are compiled by humans. Which is better? That's a moot point. It doesn't matter. What matters is that regardless of how and where your site is submitted, you have taken steps to ensure a high ranking within results.
Below is more detailed information about the differences between search engines and directories:
Search Engines:
The search engines' index or database, is compiled by robots, or spiders, which visit your site and analyze and log your pages, then reports its finding back to the search engines' database or index.
Directories:
Directories are human powered indexing system. When a site is submitted to a directory based search engine, an actual human visits your site and decides if the site will be added to their index, or database. Once your site has been indexed by a directory, it is very difficult, if not impossible to get your listing changed or change the category in which you appear.
Now that we understand these important differences, lets talk about Keywords. Next Section>
