GreatPolls.com

GreatPolls.com (a.k.a. TrafficMover) is a site built and operated by MostlyWeb. We thought of the concept, refined the idea, designed it, and then built it. Featuring a truly diverse set of functionality, GreatPolls serves as a perfect example of what we're capable of. It shows we can develop ideas, design beautiful sites, develop complex back-end database systems, integrate e-commerce, and manage the entire process.

Featured work performed falls into the following categories:

Design
There are a few aspects to the design of GreatPolls that may be of interest. First of all, we designed the site and branding. The logo represents the notion of using polls to move traffic deeper into your site. (The original name of the site was TrafficMover.com.)

What was more challenging was to ensure that our users would create good-looking polls and result windows. We accomplished this by creating poll templates and themes. Users can pick the template that includes the components (text, links, ads, etc.) that they were looking for. But then we took it one step further. Each template has a number of "themes" which present the user with compatible color schemes, type faces, and other design elements. As a result, our users are able to easily create great-looking polls without requiring design or technical skills.

Content Management System
MostlyWeb built a huge Content Management System ("CMS") for GreatPolls.com (a.k.a. TrafficMover). It remains as one of the largest, most comprehensive systems we ever built.

The CMS allows administrators to easily add poll and result-window templates plus specify all the default settings. The same goes for 'Themes' which allow users to pick from compatible color schemes and font combinations. The CMS also let's us create sample polls, add new pricing plans plus includes an extensive Customer Service area with detailed billing history, usage reports, facility to change passwords, and so on.

eCommerce
GreatPolls.com (a.k.a. TrafficMover) required a different way to charge customers. All obvious models didn't work as it either over-charged small sites or under-charged the very large companies that use our system. So MostlyWeb came up with a pricing scheme that worked for everyone: prepaid "Poll Cards" that work similar to those prepaid phone cards. Except, when a Poll Card runs out, we don't discontinue our service but rather enter into a grace period while sending automated emails to the customer urging them to purchase another card. The site offers three different levels of PollCards plus a calculator that helps people predict usage based on site traffic. Other commerce features include advance notification based on average poll usage and exhaustive reporting.

Interactive Gadgets
Depending on your definition of gadgets, GreatPolls.com (a.k.a. TrafficMover) might qualify as one giant gadget. It allows our customers to create single-question polls to add to their sites. This without design expertise or having to know anything about HTML.

In order to accomplish this, there is plenty of gadgetry operating in the background: a poll usage estimator, poll & result-window templates, color themes, window sizing, link tracking, and so on. Another impressive feature allows our customers to change poll options (answers) even while the poll has already been put into production.

Databases
GreatPolls.com (a.k.a. TrafficMover) makes extensive use of (SQL 7) databases. Other than the FAQ's, the entire site is served up dynamically. Users' log on information is encrypted and stored in a database table. All polls and accompanying result-windows are stored there too. Plus, any time users vote, or click an ad or link in the result window, that information is stored in the database.

As a result, our customers can tell exactly who logged in when, how users voted, what links they clicked and so on. Plus, armed with all this (historical usage pattern) information, MostlyWeb sends out advance notices to our customers with predictions when their account might expire allowing them ample time to renew.
