Preferred Real Estate PREI deals with real estate. They're a resource for the purchase, development, leasing and management of commercial and industrial real estate on the East Coast. But these guys do something different from the run-of-the-mill corporate park stuff. They transform unique, older properties (with all their inherent charm and characteristics) into contemporary business environments with all the bells and whistles you can think of. To give them a state of the art web presence to match their unique company philosophy, they turned to Bjornson Design and MostlyWeb. The original designs were created by Bjornson Design, a graphical design shop in Center City (Philadelphia). We took those designs and created two sites for PREI: a Flash site for higher bandwidth users and a more slender, HTML version. The Flash site is quite unique. It is one of the few sites we created (or have seen on the web, for that matter) in which the navigation is dynamic. In other words, when the client adds a property or person to their site (using our admin tool), the Flash productions are automatically updated! We accomplished this by creating a layer of Java code between an Access database and Flash. After ironing out the kinks and overcoming unexpected (and undocumented) hurdles, we got it to work. The result is a beautiful site that uses Flash to add subtle design treatments rather than merely add animated eye candy. If you have a second, check out the Flash version of the site and visit the various sections. We split things up into separate Flash productions so that it loads quickly even on slower connections. The properties page is stunning, using subtle transparency modes on the text boxes, custom scroll bars, some animation and transition effects, and more. The administration utilities we built for PREI allows them to add/edit/delete properties, news, personnel and more.

Design The original designs were provided by Bjornson Design accompanied by the request that the subtleties of their designs not get lost in the translation to the Web. So we created a Flash site that is simply beautiful and true to the provided designs. A flat site was created also for users without the required plug-in. |

CMS The client (PREI) expressed the desire to make changes to their site without our involvement. So we created them a mini CMS that allows them to update personnel, news and properties at any time. |

Dynamic Most sites we create these days use a database but PREI is different. We used Flash as the front-end to an Access database through layers of ActionScript. When the client adds or edits content, the Flash navigation and content are updated automatically. |
